Bedford House Cemetery :
Private Peaceful
Vroeg op pad voor een bezoekje aan Bedford House Cemetery (Rijselseweg, Zillebeke) :
een van de mooiste Commonwealth-begraafplaatsen nabij Ieper.
Tijdens een bezoek enkele jaren geleden, maakte Auteur Michael Morpurgo (ook bekend van 'War Horse') een wandeling over deze begraafplaats, toen het graf – en vooral de naam - van Private Peaceful hem opviel.
Op dat moment besliste hij dat zijn nieuwe roman deze naam ging dragen.
Het verhaal is dat van een jonge soldaat, Thomas 'Tommo' Peaceful, die in de nacht voor een belangrijke aanval zijn korte leven overloopt.
Een mooi overzicht van het stille plattelandsleven van destijds, over dromen, ontluikende liefdes en ontgoochelingen…en hoe hij uiteindelijk samen met zijn broer Charlie aan het front terechtkomt.
Het verhaal is volledig fictief, maar ondertussen kwam de auteur in contact met de familie van de echte private Peaceful.
Thomas Samuel Henry Peaceful kwam als 19-jarige in Ieper terecht, en stierf aan zijn verwondingen in juni 1915. Hij ging als vrijwilliger naar het front, voor vele jonge mannen leek dit 'the opportunity of a lifetime'…
Hoewel het boek van Michael Morpurgo voor de jeugd is bedoeld, heb ik er graag naar geluisterd. Het is namelijk ook bewerkt tot een uitstekend hoorspel. Ideaal om je Engels wat bij te schaven tijdens deze zomervakantie.

Private Peaceful
A visit at dawn to Bedford House Cemetery (Rijselseweg, Zillebeke): one of the most beautiful Commonwealth cemeteries near Ypres.
During a visit to 'Flanders Fields' a few years ago, author Michael Morpurgo (also known from "War Horse") was on this cemetery, when the tomb (and name) of Private Peaceful drew his attention.
At that moment he decided that his new
novel would carry this name.
The story is that of a young soldier, Thomas 'Tommo' Peaceful, who overlooks his young life, the night before a major attack.
A nice overview of the quiet countrylife 100 years ago, about dreams, an unrequited love and disappointments ... and how he ended up with his brother Charlie at the front.
The story is completely fictional, but in the meantime the author came in contact with the family of the true private Peaceful.
