14 juli 2014, Carnoy British Cemetery, bij het graf van Wilfred Nevill, de man achter de "Football Charge"...(Slag aan de Somme, 1 juli 1916) (met dank aan Michel Decru)
 
Op de eerste dag van deze vreselijke slag was Captain Wilfred ("Billie") Nevill aangeduid als het hoofd van "B" Company van het 8th Battalion van de East Surreys.
 
Tijdens zijn verlof had Nevill in Londen voor zijn 2 pelotons een voetbal gekocht. Om toch de druk wat te verlichten bij het "over the top" gaan en zomaar het niemandsland in te stappen, kreeg elk peloton een bal om voor zich uit te drijven... wie als eerste zijn bal in de Duitse loopgraven kon schoppen, was de winnaar...
 
Dit om het vertrouwen aan te geven waarmee de Britten de Duitse loopgraven konden tegemoet lopen : een week lang voorafgaand artillerievuur moest de Duitsers wel hebben uitgeschakeld...een gruwelijke misrekening.
 
Hoewel de East Surreys redelijk succesvol waren die dag, en erin slaagden om Montauban te veroveren, bleef Captain Nevill steken in het prikkeldraad net voor de Duitse eerste loopgraaf. Hij werd getroffen door een kogel in het hoofd, vijf minuten na het begin van de aanval.
 
Nadien gebruikten de Duitsers dit voetballen als voorbeeld vande Britse "madness", want de Britten leden in deze eerste dag ongelooflijk zware verliezen. 19.240 Britse soldaten vonden die dag de dood aan de Somme, het overgrote deel in de eerste 2 uren...
 
In de Daily Mail verscheen dit gedicht als eerbetoon :
 
On through the hail of slaughter,
Where gallant comrades fall,
Where blood is poured like water,
They drive the trickling ball.
The fear of death before them,
Is but an empty name,
True to the land that bore them,
The Surreys played the game.
 
Carnoy British Cemetery, monday July 14th, 2014
at the grave of Wilfred Nevill, the man behind the "Football Charge" ...
(Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916)

On the first day of this terrible battle Captain Wilfred ("Billie") Nevill was designated as the head of "B" Company of the 8th Battalion of the East Surreys.

During his leave in London, Nevill bought 2 footballs for his platoons.

In order to relieve some pressure on going "over the top" and to walk into no man's land, he gave every platoon a ball to drive ... the platoon that kicked his ball as first in the German trenches, won this challenge ...

This was to indicate that the British could walk with confidence towards the German lines, after one week of very intense artillery fire, no Germans would be left in the front trenches... a terrible miscalculation.

Although the East Surreys were successful that day, and managed to take Montauban, Captain Nevill just reached the barbed wire before the German front trench, where he was hit by a bullet in the head. This was only five minutes after the start of the attack.

Afterwards, the Germans used this "football game" as an example
of British "madness", because the British suffered incredibly heavy losses that day...

The Daily Mail published this poem in tribute to the East Surreys:
