Het tankkerkhof bij Bellewaerde

p. 238 : "Tank Graveyard at Clapham Junction,
9 August 1917.
De sector Bellewaerde-Hooge (langs de Meenseweg), waar Clapham Junction deel van uitmaakte, was heel de oorlog fel bevochten.
Tussen juni en september 1915 waren hier al Britse aanvallen om de hoogten in handen te krijgen, maar de Duitsers hielden deze sector hardnekkig vast.
Tijdens de 3e slag bij Ieper (Passendale) probeerden de Britten hier ook door te breken, maar dit lukt maar met veel moeite.
Op 31 juli 1917 wordt hier een kleine vooruitgang geboekt, maar de doelen voor die dag lagen veel verder.
De Britten hadden met felle artillerie-beschietingen vooraf, het te veroveren terrein herschapen in een totaal verwoest moeras.
Veel van de tanks die op 31 juli 1917 werden gebruikt ter ondersteuning van de aanval, vielen uit door mechanische pech, of liepen vast in modder, putten en plassen.
Veel tanks werden hier ook het slachtoffer van Duits geschut, waarvoor deze trage monsters een gemakkelijk doelwit waren...
Waar nu het pretpark Bellewaerde is, speelden zich de vreselijkste taferelen af. Duizenden soldaten zijn hier gewoon verdwenen, de lichamen werden nooit gevonden.

The Bellewaerde-Hooge sector (along the Menin Road), where Clapham Junction was a part of,
was the scenery of fierce fighting throughout the war.
Between June and September 1915 there were several British attacks to get hold of these heights, but the Germans held this sector tenaciously.
During the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele),
the British also tried to break through the German lines here, but this could only be done with great difficulty.
On July 31, 1917 only a little progress could be made here, but the goals for that day were much further.
The heavy shelling in advance of 3rd Ypres, transformed the ground in a totally devastated marsh.
Many of the tanks that were used that day, in support of the infantry-attack, fell out due to mechanical failure, or got stuck in the mud, trenches or water-filled shellholes.
Many tanks were also hit by German artillery, because these tanks were a slow and easy target ...
Where now is the amusement park Bellewaerde, horrible scenes in the great war took place.
Thousands of soldiers that fell here, were never buried or found.
