De sector Bellewaerde-Hooghe was doorheen de hele oorlog een fel bevochten sector.
Dit (uitsluitend Engelstalige) boek focust zich volledig op “the Battle of Bellewaarde” die hier plaatsvond op 16 juni 1915.
Op het eerste zicht een heel korte tijdspanne, op een beperkt terrein, maar het verloop van de slag wordt zeer gedetailleerd uitgewerkt.
Er werden bronnen verzameld van alle deelnemende bataljons, zowel tijdens de strijd als vooraf, en ook de Duitse zijde komt ruim aan bod.
Bedoeld als een afleidingsaanval voor een ander offensief in Givenchy (F), wordt hier geprobeerd om de (zoals zo vaak) hoger gelegen Duitse posities in te nemen.
Nadeel lijkt dat er niet veel kaarten of plattegronden staan in het boek, maar het terrein van de operaties is dan ook maar een zakdoek groot… met één plattegrond waarop alle posities zijn aangeduid, kun je alles perfect volgen.

Het boek geeft vooral een schrijnend beeld hoe in dit eerste oorlogsjaar nog gezocht wordt naar manieren om infanterie en artillerie beter te laten samenwerken.
Met gekleurde vlaggen dienden de infanteristen hun (veroverde) posities aan te duiden, maar veelal waren deze niet zichtbaar vanwege de rook en de chaos…
Er worden enkele lessen geleerd, maar het is niet moeilijk in te denken dat door deze gebrekkige methodes vele slachtoffers vallen, vaak door “friendly fire” dus.
Het is ook ironisch om vast te stellen dat de meest succesvolle aanvallers slachtoffer worden van hun eigen succes. Te ver vorderen in vijandelijk terrein, terwijl de aangrenzende bataljons niet opschuiven, leidt steeds tot een onmogelijke situatie.
Na het verslag van de gebeurtenissen, die niet tot echte resultaten leidden, volgt een – zeer confronterende – lange lijst slachtoffers, waarvan praktisch allen vermist bleven.
Besluit : geen boek voor wo1-beginners, het vraagt wat inzet en ervaring om deze uitvoerig beschreven slagveldgebeurtenissen helemaal door te lezen. Maar als je werkelijk alles wil weten over wat zich hier in die dagen afspeelde, in de omgeving woont, of familieleden hebt die hier vielen : een absolute aanrader!
Met de aankoop van het boek steun je ook een goed doel : de oprichting van het “Bellewaarde-memorial”, een initiatief van Martin Clift, gesteund door een werkgroep in de streek.

The Bellewaerde-Hooghe sector (Ypres Salient, Flanders) was throughout the war
the scenery of fierce fighting.
This book focuses entirely on "the Battle of Ballewaarde" that took place here on June 16, 1915.
At first sight a very short time, on a limited area, but the course of the battle is worked out in great detail.
Sources were collected from all participating battalions, both during the fight as before, and also the German side is well described.
Intended as a diversionary attack for another offensive in Givenchy (F), the Allies try to take the higher German positions.
It seems a drawback that there are not many maps in the book, but the area of operations can be overviewed in one plan, on page 152, with all positions marked.

The book gives an especially poignant picture how, in this first year of the war, a method is searched for how infantry and artillery can cooperate better.
With colored flags, the infantrymen were to mark their positions and advances, but often these were not visible because of the smoke and chaos ...
Costly lessons were learned, it is not difficult to believe that these "try-outs" demanded many casualties, often by "friendly fire"…
It is ironic to note that the most successful attackers often became victims of their own success. Advancing far into enemy territory, while the adjacent battalions do not, always leads to an impossible situation.
After the report of the events, which lead to no real results, you find a - very confronting - long list of victims. All fell on just one day, and remained practically all missing…
Conclusion: it is not a book for wo1-beginners, it takes some effort and experience to completely read this detailed description of battlefield events.
But if you really want to know everything about what happened here in those days, or if you live in the area, or have ancestors who fought here: an absolute must!
